Waterton

I spent a couple days in Waterton Lakes National Park, just across the border from Glacier. Waterton features majestic mountains, sparkling lakes, rushing streams; all the fine assets of pristine Alpine country. At this time of year there are many flowers in bloom and the creeks are rushing robustly. Unlike US national parks, many Canadian parks have a bona fide town within the boundaries of the park. Waterton's townsite has abundant restaurants and shops, but it's not too hectic...at least in early June. You can drive..or even hike...a few minutes into the wilderness, then come back into town and enjoy the modcons. This pic shows the park's small buffalo herd, which has increased by three this spring...note the calves. It appears the adults have let themselves go...rather scruffy, I say.

Here's a shot of Upper Waterton Lake from above the townsite. Gorgeous! The weather in town was not quite so fine...downslope winds howled almost incessantly while I was there, which is not an uncommon phenomenon.

This pic was taken in Red Rock Canyon, named for obvious reasons. I hiked and hung out in this area for several hours yesterday (Jun 9). It was beautiful and peaceful, not too many people, and the Old Sloat saw no reason to activate his flippers!
