I visited the Royal Tyrrell Museum in Drumheller, Alberta today...had wanted to see this place for years. It's one of the world's premier dinosaur museums, with dozens of skeletons on display. Most were found near here...this area is one of the world's foremost dinosaur graveyards. Here's da man, T-Rex his own self!
A better view of his head. Fully grown, Tyrannosaurus was about 50 feet long...stood 18 feet high...and had teeth averaging about 6 inches long. Even a large pinniped like the Old Sloat would be nothing more than a tapa for this beast.
This is Triceratops, T-Rex's main rival in the late Cretaceous period, about 70 million years ago.
Triceratops moved in herds, like elephants of our present day. Like an elephant or rhino, Triceratops was a formidable opponent with his size (about 30 feet long), horns, and head armor. But from T-Rex's viewpoint, if he could get to Tri's backside and do massive damage there, what a great dinner! High risk/reward ratio, I reckon. Tyrannosaurus probably feasted more often on duck billed dinosaurs, who appear to have been the wildebeests of their day...large but easy prey for the big predators.
