This blog is primarily a travelogue. I am retired from the National Weather Service and on the road as much as possible! Though I have done a lot of traveling, there are still many places I haven't been. I'm still missing five US states and, though I've been to Europe four times, that's not nearly enough. And then there are the islands of the South Pacific. And though I've been to Australia eight times, with four visits to New Zealand, it's always great to go back there.
The bark of the ponderosa is a beautiful reddish brown, with intricate patterns. Up close, it's rather abstract.

After over 28 years in the National Weather Service, I have finally retired and will travel and explore as much as possible over the coming years. There are many things I like to do that I have been too lazy to pursue vigorously while working, including writing, photography, playing the electric guitar: learning foreign languages; possibly even reviving my stamp collection which was lost years ago. Also, I need to get into better shape! Now that I'm retiring, I'd like to spend a month or two at a time living in different places to really get a feel for them above the normal sightseeing that a touron does; I want to feel what it's like to live in places rather than just visiting them. Spots I'd like to hang out at for long periods of time include Australia, Ireland, Spain, Italy, Hawaii, Lake Tahoe, and...geez, there are hundreds of others!

And if you get right up to the tree and take a big whiff of the bark, it smells just like butterscotch! Try it sometime - it is not what you'd expect.
